If you have been following me for a while, you will know I'm a skin care FREAK. It's how I wake up each morning and how I relax at the end of each day. Almost meditation time for me.
Sheet masks are the most frustrating part of my skin care for me. I love them, don't get me wrong. What I do NOT love are some of the ingredients and the packaging. Several 'high end' sheet masks (such great ingredients list, really great for the skin) came with plastic supoort netting, that had me absolutely triggered. I was so mad that a company would use extra, unnecessary plastic for a piece of cotton mask! It was just ludicrous and I was OVER IT. I did end up using that plastic netting on home repairs but still. I guarantee most people wouldn't reuse them. Who would? It's not meant to be reused, they meant for it to be trash, unnecessary and unwanted.
What really is dumb, in my opinion, is when a company boasts about the mask itself being made of 'natural, unbleached cotton' or whatever other green washed claim, yet it is STILL in a plastic package! Cool, glad you avoided all the things it's literally been packaged in for goodness knows how long. Certainly nothing is contaminated 🙄
AND Generally, after EVERY face mask I would wash my face. Why? Many of the ingredients I just didn't WANT to stay sitting on my skin! Also, the majority of the crap ingredients broke my spoiled-rotten skin out. So why even put them on there in the first place... 🤔
So now? I make my own.
I have several washable, self made masks that I soak in an essence of my choosing!
I enjoy skipping the butane glycol (petroleum based) and propylene glycol (considered a probable carcinogen) along with harsh alcohols, pore clogging ingredients, parabens, synthetic colors/scents and more things I just do not want on my face.
Here are some of my favorite sheet mask recipes! I make this up per mask I use. Just so I'm not wasting any essence or risk it going bad. I only make about a shot glass amount of essence fresh or freeze it! Thaw it at room temperature and use!
Liquid of choice can be anything from a store bought essence you love to this list here:
-Kombucha or Jun
-Witch hazel (not really recommended to use often due to alcohol content, mainly for active breakouts)
Fun and functional add-ons include:
-Organic, food grade glycerin (feel free to hit up GMO free as well). This adds a moisture-retaining quality and also helps keep oils and liquids from separating as badly.
-Tinctures and extracts from your favorite herbs
- Essential oils. These add aromatherapy and benefit from the plant matter used. Be smart when choosing these. They are STRONG, and many can be photosensitizing, harsh and/or dangerous for some people. So use SPARINGLY.
- Herbal powders
-Hyaluronic acid (our body NATURALLY produces this chemical. It's not the kind of acid that burns or destroys but rather retains moisture. Our skin actually declines in the production of this as we age).
K͞a͞o͞l͞i͞n͞ S͞h͞e͞e͞t͞ M͞a͞s͞k͞
-Liquid of choice (I love my homemade Himalayan pink salt toner for this as, I believe, it aids in the detox process. Usually Kombucha and salt infused with thyme, turmeric, oregano and lemongrass herbs. Witch hazel at 50:50 ratio with Kombucha would be great as well).
-Pinch of kaolin clay (not a lot! You want it to work but not to cement the mask to your face!)
-pinch of Fresh, dried or powdered plantain leaf
Place everything in a food processor and process until smooth. Soak your sheet mask and apply. Leave on from 5-10 minutes.
I really love how my skin feels after this mask. I use this if I am around my monthly hormonal breakout time or if I used a product and my skin is revolting against me.
-Liquid of choice (I love rose hydrosol I make! Hydrosols are easily found online but be aware that a hydrosol with no preservatives have a VERY short shelf life! Talking days to maybe weeks after it's bottled. That's not including shipping time or time it takes to use it up!)
- 3-5 fresh Rose petals or pinch of rose petal powder
-1 drop, per mask, of rose absolute essential oil
-4-5 drops of rose hip seed oil
-1-2 drops of organic, food grade glycerin
-1-2 drops of melted shea butter (can be brought to liquid state in your rose hip seed oil or whichever oil you choose)
Place everything in a food processor and process until smooth. Soak your sheet mask and apply. Leave on from 10-20 minutes.
I find this mask to be SO luxurious feeling, my skin is so soft afterwards. It smells so amazing as well!

-Liquid of choice (Calendula hydrosol for this mask. Possibly grand with a calenula tea or green tea/matcha as well!)
- 1Tbsp Fresh, 1/2 Tbsp dehydrated or a pinch of powdered centella asiatica and/or calendula powder.
-2-3 drops of Tincture of centella asiatica
-1 drop of organic, food grade glycerin
Blend all your ingredients well and soak mask. Leave mask on skin for 10-20 minutes.
Centella asiatica, or Gotu Kola, has been used all over the world and known for amazing skin benefits. I adore this mask! I use it when my skin is dry, damaged or healing from a micro-needle or acid treatment.
Feel free to play around with your own recipes! I generally avoid any sugary or food like ingredients on my face, unless I plan on washing my face right after. Always ask your doctor before using any new products, even homemade. There is nothing wrong with a second opinion and ALLERGY TEST way before you use it. If you need to, go to the doctor and ask about allergy testing as well. Just because it's 'natural' or growing outside does NOT mean it's okay for skin. I found poison ivy growing right by my door and I can promise you, that would NOT be a good thing for my skin to come into contact with. Why? I AM ALLERGIC. Case and point.
Sheet mask are so great for really trapping moisture and skin-helping ingredients on your skin. The theory is that it allows your skin to really 'drink in' the benefits instead of it just evaporating off at a more rapid rate as when exposed. Regardless, I love sheet masks and The Smart Girl in Pants can be found in her natural habitat wondering around lookin' all mummy, doing a variety of household chores, blogging, working and even cardio. I also made a few masks from upcycled jersey-stretch fabric with loops that go around my ears so it doesn't fall off! My favorite for a lux experience is a sheet mask I made from a satin shirt my friend gave me. It was way wrecked and she knew I would reuse it. I have 5 and wash them after each and every use. They feel SO much better on my face then the thin cotton ones.
This way, I save money, know what is in my products and avoid countless plastic packages, gross ingredients and being triggered over a company with zero compassion for our environment. Win for this Smart Girl in Pants!
