Sick season is coming!
Despite what we were told as children, the cold doesn't not give you a cold. It's probably being stuck inside breathing germ-air, touching germ covered surfaces or in close proximity to an infected person that does.
Hand sanitizer has has been given a horrible rep recently! And for good reason. It's absolutely over used. Let me state this now, if hand washing is an option take it. Wash hands over using any hand sanitizer. Bars of soap may hold bacteria on the surface but guess what? So do soap bottles and sink handles, you wash it off. Aka the point of washing your hands. Just don't touch the bar of soap or soap container after washing and you are golden.
I LAUGHED SO HARD at those automatic soap dispenser commericials! 'OH NO! Don't touch that germ covered bottle! How EVER will you get those germs off?!' Hmm... idk... by washing hands, maybe? More proof of companies telling you that you need something that you really do not. If you touch the soap and it's got germs, wash your hands! That was the purpose of touching the soap anyway! If your hands are gross, wash the soap too! I do even if my soap is NOT gross! I even wash my fox soap dispenser. Don't hate the fox. Anyway, cleaning is part of life. Even soap dispensers get dusty, may as well wash it while I wash my hands.
Hand sanitizer is meant to be a quick fix until you can get to a sink! That's all! It's not even guaranteed to KILL germs! Just to give you time to wash the germs off of your body and decrease the risk of those germs coming into contact with mucus membranes and spreading into your system.
I wouldn't call myself a germaphobe but I can say I know enough about germs that I do carry hand sanitizer with me at all times. In a blog, I did dish test on supposedly antibacterial items. My hand sanitizer was one of them and the results were in it's favor.
Here is my recipe:
-Vodka, higher proof the better, 1 cup (you can infuse the vodka with herbs like lavender if you like)
-Shea butter, 1/4 cup
-Essential oils (I used lemon, cinnamon, spikenard, oregano, thyme, tea tree and rosemary)
Melt your shea butter and whip into the vodka. This is your moisturizer. Vodka is very dehydrating and the worst thing for skin is dehydration.
Once shea is warm, not hot, add In your essential oils. I used 3-4 drops for this entire recipe. I blend my oils together first and used 3-4 drops. That's it. More and you risk sensitizing your skin to the plant matter. Which will lead to reactions later.
Continue whipping until it's blended. Feel free to add any preservatives at this point if you like. I love grapefruit seed extract.
I love making this as gifts WITH a label and tag!
Love and avoiding the cold, hopefully.

Store in glass jars and toss out once signs of deterioration become apparent. I find it lasts me upwards of 6 months when unexposed to germs and bacteria (don't get it out with your fingers!).
Do not ingest. Do not get into eyes or any other mucus menbrane. This is not meant to be your only form of illness prevention or germ killing and no hand sanitizer kills 100% of germs, bacteria or viruses. This is a temporary and rarely used product until you can wash your hands with actual soap for the recommended time to remove germs and bacteria. This is NOT meant to sanitize food, serving dishes or utensils. This does not replace washing hands with soap and water.
